How to remove super glues

All advice is given in good faith; end user should conduct their own tests to determine suitability.

We are often asked questions relating to super glues “cyanoacrylates”.

Number one question is how do you remove super glue from various surfaces?

Various options are available, we will try and outline the pro’s and con’s of some materials that are available below.

One question is the solubility factor, i.e. how soluble the super glue is in certain types of solvents  how fast the solvent flashes off, if the solvent evaporates too  fast it may not have time to work on the super glue.

 Acetone

Pro’s – cheap and good solubility factor, best used when you can submerge to de-bond the component in a covered bath of the solvent.

Con’s – Highly flammable, fast evaporation rate which can lead to a combustible   airborne mixture caution needs to be used, can dissolve certain plastic type materials.

 Methylene Chloride

Pro’s – Non-flammable solvent with a good solubility factor,  best used when you can submerge  to de-bond the component,  best used in a covered bath with good extraction  of the solvent.

Con’s – Methylene Chloride is a potential occupational carcinogen.  Short-term exposures to high concentrations may cause mental confusion, light-headedness, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Continued exposure may also cause eye and respiratory tract irritation. Exposure to methylene chloride may make symptoms of angina more severe. Skin exposure to liquid methylene chloride may cause irritation or chemical burns.  Can also dissolve certain plastics.

 Sureloc  Super Glue De-bonder (SL06).

Pro’s - Non-flammable, low toxicity, no evaporation factor, thixotropic (goes from a gel to a fluid by shaking the bottle and then reverts back to a gel in seconds).  Can be used for removing super glue from fingers, but not eyes or mouth.

Ideal for fast and easy removal of super glue can be used to remove glue from tools and other materials.* Check* for compatibility on a small area before using on finished surfaces. .

Con’s - May require the use of another solvent such as Isopropyl Alcohol to remove residual amounts of the de-bonder.  Not suitable for removing super glue from fabrics.
